Endpoint protection is the software on the laptops and servers that notices a program behaving like ransomware or a remote tool nobody installed. A traditional antivirus that looks up a file name is not enough on its own, because a lot of what we see is a legitimate tool used in a bad way. Group 4 Networks deploys endpoint detection and response for Toronto and GTA firms, watches the alerts, and tells you when something needs a person rather than a silent quarantine.

The rollout is where this usually fails. Agents get installed on the head office laptops and never on the warehouse PCs, the Mac someone bought, or the server that still runs the line of business app. We inventory the devices first. Anything that touches company data gets an agent or a written reason it cannot. Servers are included. A laptop that only a contractor uses on Fridays is included. Exceptions are a list, not a shrug.

Alerts are noisy if nobody tunes them. We would rather you hear about a real encryption attempt than about every tool your accounting firm is allowed to run. Tuning takes a couple of weeks of looking at what your people actually open. During that time we still act on the serious ones: mass file changes, a remote shell, a disabled agent. You get a note that says what we did, not a raw dashboard link and good luck.

Endpoint protection does not replace backups, mail filtering, or a person who knows how to unplug a machine. If a laptop is encrypting files, we isolate it. If the backup from last night is good, you can restore the share. If the backup has not been tested, the agent did its job and you still have a hard day. We say that before you buy it. The 15 minute P1 response target applies when an active incident is underway.

What is included? Deployment, the exceptions list, alert review, and isolation when a device is in trouble. What is not included? A promise that nothing will ever run. How does this sit with managed IT? On the higher managed IT tiers, endpoint detection is part of the plan rather than a box you have to remember to renew. Call (416) 623-9677 if you want to know which devices we would put it on first.

Group 4 Networks has been at 18 King Street East since 2008. We will not quote a detection percentage we have not measured on your network. We will tell you which machines are covered, who gets the alert, and what isolate means for the person trying to finish a document. That is the useful version of endpoint protection.
