Deployed an Azure Virtual Machine in the Canada Central region, configured to the specifications required by Dentrix's supported environment guidelines. Migrated the Dentrix database, imaging data (X-rays and intraoral photographs), and all associated files to the Azure environment. Configured Azure Virtual Desktop so that clinical workstations connected to the VM without requiring any changes to the chairside experience — staff workflows remained identical to the pre-migration environment.
The practice's file server was running Windows Server 2016 on hardware that had exceeded its expected service life. The practice owner had been advised by their previous IT provider that the server would need to be replaced within the next year, representing a capital expenditure the practice wanted to avoid. The previous IT provider had quoted a physical server replacement — the practice owner wanted to understand whether cloud was a viable alternative.
Enabled BitLocker encryption on the Azure VM and configured Azure Blob Storage with encryption at rest for the imaging archive. Implemented role-based access in Dentrix so that front-desk staff, dental assistants, and dentists each had access only to the records required for their role. Configured access audit logging so that any access to patient records generated a timestamped log entry, satisfying PHIPA's audit trail requirements.
A single-location Toronto dental practice was running Dentrix on an aging on-premises server that was approaching end-of-life. The practice owner wanted to eliminate the hardware refresh cycle, improve reliability, and bring the practice into alignment with PHIPA requirements for patient data security. Group 4 Networks migrated the full environment to Azure Canada Central — without interrupting a single patient appointment.
The practice opened Monday with a fully operational cloud environment. Dentrix performed identically to the on-premises installation — no staff retraining was required and no clinical workflows were modified. The practice owner eliminated the pending hardware replacement cost and moved to a predictable monthly IT cost that includes the Azure infrastructure, ongoing management, monitoring, and support.
