Monitoring means a person or a system notices the server, the firewall, the backup, or the tenant is unhealthy before your staff does. Twenty four hours matters because disks fill up on Saturdays and mail queues at night. Group 4 Networks watches those signals for Toronto and GTA firms from the practice at 18 King Street East. An alert that nobody sees is not monitoring.
What we actually watch depends on what you run. A firm with a server gets disk, service, and backup checks. A firm that is only Microsoft 365 gets sign in failures, mail flow, and forwarding rules. A warehouse gets the firewall and the wireless controller if losing them stops the floor. We write the list down. We do not claim to watch every packet on a network we have not seen.
After hours response uses a 15 minute P1 target. P1 is the event that stops the business or looks like an active security incident. The target is the first response, not a technician in your lobby. A lot of night alerts are fixed remote: a service restarted, a full disk cleared, a circuit that the provider has to own. You get a note in the morning that says what fired and what we did, unless we had to wake you because a decision was yours.
Noise is the enemy. A monitor that emails fifty times a day teaches people to ignore it. We tune the thresholds in the first weeks. A backup that has not succeeded is always worth a ticket. A CPU spike at lunch while a report runs is not. You can ask what is on the list, and you can ask us to add the one job you care about, like the shipping label service.
How is this different from the help desk? The help desk answers when a person calls. Monitoring answers when a machine is unhappy and nobody has called yet. Most managed plans include both. If you only want someone on the phone, say that. If you want the night covered, this is the piece. Call (416) 623-9677. We have done this since 2008.
We will show you a week of alerts once the tuning has settled, in plain language. How many were real, how many were noise, which backup has not been tested. If a check cannot see a system because a password expired, that is our ticket to fix, not a green dashboard. Monitoring that depends on a stale login is how firms think they are covered and are not.
Ask which checks failed in the last month and which were noise. If that answer is not in the notes, the monitoring is not finished, no matter what colour the dashboard shows. A stale login on a backup job is treated as a failed check, not as a quiet success.
